- Summary:
- The academic model of primitive Native life, handed down through textbooks and popular literature, is being challenged by recent and astounding archaeological discoveries in eastern North America. This final segment of the "Hidden Landscapes" series chronicles the discovery that early indigenous peoples had a profound understanding of their natural environment, going all the way back to the most recent of Earth's ice ages, over 10,000 years ago. When surprising revelations about early Native architecture are paired with the new understanding that these Paleolithic peoples were sophisticated, maritime-adapted societies, able to navigate the northern ocean at will, the resulting new vision of early Native life can change our sense of, not just North American history, but of world history. These forgotten cultures' ceremonial relationship to their natural environment, still discernable in their hidden landscapes, contributes importantly to the evolution of cultural and environmental preservation in North America.
