- Summary:
- In Ichijôdani, Japan, deep beneath the rice fields, archaeologists have excavated a medieval town deliberately destroyed 400 years ago. In fact, they discovered an entire city as it was during the 16th century, with its streets, houses and palaces. This city was the capital of Echizen Province for about 100 years during Japan's late medieval period. It was an important urban center that surrounded the residential complex of a warlord (daimyo) who had seized power in the civil wars of the late 15th century. Ichijôdani is the equivalent of a time capsule, representing a great source of knowledge about certain traditions still practiced in Japan today.
