Summary:
In a change of pace from the previous episodes, this installment, entitled "The Science of Archaeology," discusses standard processes of finding, sampling and excavating archaeological sites. It also explores ways in which archaeologists process, preserve and interpret the artifacts that such excavations uncover. This episode uses longer film segments, selected from interviews and discussions included in other episodes of this series, to present ways in which archaeologists discover, acquire and reduce raw data about the past into meaningful hypotheses regarding the human significance of those data, using especially examples from the archaeology of the North American sites addressed in this series.
