Summary:
For more than 800 years, Lalibela, a small town lost in the heart of the Ethiopian mountains, has been attracting tens of thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church pilgrims every year. They come to gather in one of the twelve churches carved into the rock and listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Until now, only legend has told the story of these monolithic churches. Now, archaeologists have managed to shed light on the history of this holy place. Their version is certainly less poetic, but at the same time both factual and fascinating.
