Summary:
For thousands of years, stunning petroglyphs on the volcanic tablelands near Bishop, California, shimmered in the starlight. But then a menace struck. Looters, armed with rock saws and chisels, destroyed this ancient site, leaving everyone concerned with big questions: Why? What was the motivation for this irreversible destruction? Was it simple vandalism? Was it a "for profit" venture, to sell the torn-out antiquities on the black market? Was it out of racism toward indigenous peoples? It is not possible for the public to care or even to become knowledgeable about the magnificence and fragility of such cultural resources as the Bishop petroglyphs, if that public is not regularly informed and educated about their humanistic value, and about the need for their protection and preservation.
