Summary:
This episode looks at diverse and varied examples of cities and how the process of Romanization occurred. It becomes clear that Roman affluence was more powerful than military might, and almost as decisive, in the construction and success of the Empire. The episode begins in "Los Bañales," a little-known and modest location with a surprising and well preserved Roman spa. Then it's on to the archaeological site of Italica, in southern Spain, to encounter a much larger spa. We go to Ampurias, where we see how the Roman houses and streets were laid out. In Lisbon and Coimbra, Portugal, we discover amazing Roman techniques for preparing foundations. This involves going below ground level in Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) to see how the sewage system of a Roman city worked and consider the preparation of the terrain for the extraordinary and curious solutions adopted to prevent the city from sinking into the soft ground.
