- Summary:
- This book emerged as a result of the coming together of historians whose path intersected with "farms" and "notables" who generally owned these lands. As we spoke at the meetings and shared our work, we realized that the farm and notable literature limited us with its rigid lines and that we needed not only to do sample research but also to ask new questions. Is it possible to develop a new discourse regarding land and landowners, apart from the "farm debate" and the "age of the notables"? In other words, how can the concepts of "farm", which was restricted to a certain geography, and "ayan", which was confined to a certain period in the Ottoman Empire, be stretched? What can this flexibility say about the class structure of Ottoman provincial society? Who benefited from the opportunities and sometimes gaps of the law in this structure? As we moved from the 18th century to the 19th century, how did the notables, who were obscured by the centralization narrative heralded by the Tanzimat Era, become notables? While the claims of this group over their lands have transformed, how have the peasants who cultivate these lands and their struggle for their livelihoods changed? As a matter of fact, was the Ottoman Empire a state that constantly supervised its cavalry, resisted the double-household system, resisted farming, and in short, protected its small peasants, as is often said? Bringing together examples from different geographies of the empire, academics seek to establish a more direct relationship between land and land ownership on the empire, with a perspective that goes beyond the narrow questions asked by the extensive literature on "farm" and "notables". This book, which saves the concepts of "farm" and "ayan" from the geography limited by classical Ottoman historiography, promises new sentences, different sources and a game-changing perspective to economic and social history enthusiasts.
