- Summary:
- The rainforest of Central Africa forms a unique natural area that is only seemingly impenetrable. The widely ramified river systems not only form the backbone for archaeological research in the Congo Basin, but also provide knowledge about its pre-colonial settlement history. For the first time, the sites along the rivers Ubangi, Lua, Sangha, Ngoko and Likwala-aux-Herbes (River Reconnaissance Project, 1985-87) are presented in detail. Ceramic vessels from over 120 sites are of great importance for the reconstruction of the settlement history of the region and are classified stylistically alongside fundamental investigations into pottery technology. The ceramic style groups described here form the basis for a regional and supra-regional reconstruction of the settlement history of the Congo Basin.
