Summary:
"Using first-hand accounts from 200 Black adolescents, this book documents and validates their fears, anxieties, and complexities. Relying on four years of research, the authors point to the need for adults to "get out of the way" so they are better positioned to obtain access to understanding how these youth consider their life journeys and under what terms do they allow a relationship with an adult, which is critical and necessary for their healing. This book presents alternative frameworks to (a) invite practitioners to reconsider their approach and (b) encourage academicians to explore new avenues of inquiry. Practical strategies are identified to move the art of engagement from trauma-informed to healing and recovery, while recognizing the adaptive responses of these Black youth and their focus on "surviving.""-- Provided by publisher.
