Vormaisa (Jerusalem: Machon Yerushalayim, 1988), p. 288; Bacharach, Jair Hayyim, Sheʼelot u-teshuvot Ḥavot Yaʼir, number 182); the first part of the ledger contains the receipt of funds with the names of individuals granted travel authorization documents (f. 1r-4r); the second part is a list of recipients of the Geleitzbatzen for locales, sold through the administrator of the Worms Jewish community (f. 5v-23v) and then a general noting of the sale and distribution of Geleitzbatzen to both communities and individuals (f. 43v-60v). Familial names listed in the ledger include patronyms and toponymic surnames Bendet, Carlebach, Eberstadt, Kircheim, Lande (the name of the appointed official, or גבאי תיורים; f. 58r), Parnes, Oppenheim (including Rabbi David Oppenheim, later to be rabbi in Mikulov and Prague; "מהור"ר דוד אופנהיי' פרע על חשבון משני[ם] שני[ם] ה ר"ט"; f. 3r), Wacht, Wolch, Schweiz, the Av Beth Din of Worms (cited as "הגאון אב"ד" without a name - likely Jair Hayyim Bacharach; f. 2v), Schames, and Ulm; locales of purchasers are from not only the surrounding area of Worms but extend to Hessen, Bavaria, Neckar, westward to the Lorraine and Metz (in France) and one community today in Switzerland, Oberkulm, on f. 19r, and names with that toponym on f. 52v; some areas in Austria (such as וואכטום אן דער בראם, Wachtum an der Pram, f. 13r), and major cities listed include Mainz (f. 52v), Speyer (50v), Trier, Mannheim, and Frankfurt am Main; an adhered note on the final folio of purchase from a delegation of Lippe am Weser (many rural locales in this manuscript are of the few sources of Jews living in these places), and additional reference is made to travel to trade fairs (such as the "יריד פסח", f. 23v)
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title supplied by cataloger.
Script: Written in a German-Ashkenazic 17th century semicursive script, in multiple hands.
Origin: Written in Worms, Germany (based on listed members of the Oppenheim family in the manuscript; the note pasted on f. 60v; Worms is also missing from the list of locales) covering sales of the Geleitzbatzen for the years 5445-6 (1685-1686; dates beginning f. 42v).
Binding: Textured brown boards, likely early 20th century, with paper shelfmark on spine (typed "חשבונות", stamped "981"); manuscript waste, original wrapping the manuscript, survives as an endleaf (fragment from a bifolium from a missal, circa 15th century German; text in Gothic textualis script; musical notation in Hufnagelschrift; 380 x 155 mm (folded in at corners)).
Collation: Paper, 1-60; i (modern endpaper) + 60 + 1 medieval parchment endleaf + i (modern endpaper); 1⁶ 2-6¹⁰ 7⁴⁽⁻⁴⁾; contemporary foliation in ink, א-ס"ב, upper left recto; later pagination in lead, 1-117, lower folio; modern foliation in lead, 1-60, lower left recto (references in this record to modern foliation only).
Layout: Written in columns, linking names and sums in-line (for example, "ר' אברהם אופנהיי[ם] ב"ת [=ב' תיורים] - פרע א' ר"ט [=רייכש טאהליר]"; f. 2v); locales between names and sums (in the second portion); some columns written and outlined in the third portion (for example, f. 43r).
