Other Title:
By-elections
Summary:
These boxes contain material dealing with specific By-Elections that were covered and collected by Mass-Observation for the years 1937 to 1947. Also included is an additional file (46/18/E) of lists, analysis, and cuttings for uncontested By-Elections. Most of these By-Elections were the subject of an M-O Report (usually a typed document of at least 25 pages length, although a few are left in the form of hand-written drafts) Many have the associated raw M-O observation material (verbatim reports of political meetings attended by observers, conversations overheard in committee rooms, canvassing, in cafes and pubs, etc.) and M-O Questionnaires dealing with news items e.g. invasion of Norway, war grumbles, etc., besides the By-Election. The associated ephemera consists mainly of candidates' propaganda and news articles, in both the local and national press. Further Election material on General Elections, Municipal Elections, & Worktown By-Elections is available elsewhere in the Archive.
