Biography/History:

Stanley Wolpert was an American historian and author on the history of India, Pakistan and the Indian subcontinent, born in Brooklyn, NY on December 23, 1927. While serving as an engineer with the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1948, Wolpert visited Bombay, India, just after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. This experience led Wolpert to study Indian history and he went on to receive a B.A. from City College of New York in 1953 and an M.A. and Ph.D. in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1955 and 1959, respectively. In 1959, Wolpert became an instructor in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He subsequently became an assistant professor (1960-1963), associate professor (1963-1966), and full professor (1967) at UCLA. In 1968, he was appointed Chair of the Department of History at UCLA. In 1975, Wolpert won UCLA's Distinguished Teaching Award and became professor emeritus in 2002. He additionally earned the following fellowships and awards: Pell Medal, City College (1953); Ford Foundation Fellowship (1953-1055, 1957-1958); American Council of Learned Societies (1961); Research Council for South Asia (1962-1963); and South Asian Studies Association Award (2010). Wolpert published numerous fiction and non-fiction works, including Nine Hours to Rama (1962); Jinnah of Pakistan (1982); Congress and Indian Nationalism: The Pre-independence Phase (1984); Zulfi Bhutto of Pakistan: His Life and Times (1993); Nehru: A Tryst with Destiny (1996); Gandhi's Passion: The Life and the Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi (2001); and Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India (2006), among several others. He was also the editor in chief of the Encyclopedia of India . Jinnah of Pakistan and Gandhi's Passion: The Life and the Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi were both banned in Pakistan. Wolpert married Dorothy Wolpert (née Guberman), a senior partner at Century City law firm, on June 12, 1953. Together they had two sons, Daniel and Adam. Wolpert died on February 19, 2019.

The Stanley Wolpert papers measure 11.5 linear feet, date mostly from 1945-2000, and consist primarily of material relating to Wolpert's research on Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the history and politics of the Indian subcontinent. This collection is of value to researchers interested in various aspects of the history and politics of the Indian subcontinent, especially modern Pakistan. Wolpert's research and collected reproductions of primary sources representing and relating to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto is particularly well represented in this collection. An existing knowledge of the history of India, Pakistan, and the Indian subcontinent is helpful when using this collection. At the end of many of the subseries is a writings section containing writings on the topic by Wolpert. These writings can be useful to contextualizing the research material. Series I. "People" is the largest series, spanning 6 boxes. It mostly consists of Wolpert's research material into various notable political individuals from the Indian subcontinent. The subseries include: A. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the Bhutto family; B. Mahatma Gandhi; C. Muhammad Ali Jinnah; D. Madhu Mehta; E. Jawaharlal Nehru; and F. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Brief biographical information is provided at the subseries level in the inventory. The most significant material in this series is included in Subseries A. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the Bhutto family, sub-subseries vii. Photographic reproductions of documents in the Bhutto home in Karachi, Pakistan. This material includes photographic reproductions of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's correspondence, documents, and reports dating mostly from 1970 to 1978 and relating to his time as president and prime minister of Pakistan and to his subsequent trial and execution. Series II. "Places, border disputes, partitions, and inter-geographic relations" spans two boxes and contains the following subseries: A. Assam and Nagaland border dispute; B. Bengal and Bangladesh partition and general reference material; C. India ephemera and general reference material; D. India-Pakistan relations; E. Pakistan; F. Punjab; and G. Sri Lanka. This material mostly consists of Wolpert's research, but also includes writings both by Wolpert and others as well as some limited correspondence and notes. Series III. "Political parties, movements, and other topics" spans two boxes and contains the following subseries: A. Bharatiya Janata Party [BJP]; B. Bhoodan Movement; C. British Raj; D. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam [DMK]; F. Finance; G. Hindu Nationalism; H. Literature; I. Sarvodaya Movement; J. Separatism; K. Sikh oppression; and L. Socialism. This material mostly consists of Wolpert's research, but also includes writings both by Wolpert and others as well as some limited correspondence and notes. Series IV. "Formats" spans three boxes and contains audiocassette tapes, bibliographies, clippings and newspapers, magazines, maps, microfilm reels, photographs, pamphlets, translation and language practice material, and VHS tapes. This material has been arranged according to format because it either 1) reflects Wolpert's original order (for example, a set of clippings and newspapers that he kept sorted chronologically as opposed to topically); 2) is unidentified or partially identified; or 3) addresses a range of topics within Wolpert's areas of research. Series V: "Personal" spans two folders and includes a minimal amount of personal correspondence and programs from Stanley Wolpert's memorial service.
