Summary:
The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) joined together in a bold collaboration to create the exhibition Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America. In a time when perspectives about human rights, equality, free speech, and other democratic principles are radically disparate, the curators invited twenty artists to respond to the critical question: Is the sun rising or setting on the experiment of American democracy?" They were prompted by the words of Benjamin Franklin and James Weldon Johnson, whose poem "Lift Every Voice and Sing" became the Black National Anthem. Conceived as one exhibition on view at two museums, the commissioned works include multi-media installations, video projections, large-scale paintings and sculpture, drawings, prints, and photographs.
