- Summary:
- Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel presents "libera abstrahere", an exhibition by Rodrigo Cass (São Paulo, 1983) at Galpão in São Paulo. This first monograph dedicated to the artist's work was launched in the exhibition context. Organized by the curator Ana Paula Cohen, the book presents a broad approach to the work of the artist. In the first part, the work "Manifest Material" (Material Manifesto) (2021-2023) is introduced, today in the collection of Centro Pompidou, an installation in which concrete sculptures of varying shapes were created so that different videos were projected onto their surfaces. Complementary, an extensive selection of works is offered that runs throughout the artist's career, revealing connections and developments between his works. Exploring the concepts of matter and spirituality, Cass builds his work in dialogue; Lygia Clark, Eva Hesse and Lina Bo Bardi are some examples of artists whose works appear in tributes and quotations, and who add up to references to Byzantine iconography. The temple, a technique used by Byzantine painters, was the first artistic practice studied and practiced by Cass, still during his religious training in 2001 in the Mosteiro da Transfiguração (Monastery of the Transfiguration), of the hermitage Camaldolese monastic order, located in Mogi das Cruzes (SP). "Manifest Material", formed by 12 paintings, 12 videos and a text-manifesto of the artist divided into 12 parts, brings Cass's use of the symbology of colors and the immanent force of luminosity. The second part of the book is dedicated to works that, between the political and the poetic, cover Cass's production between 2011 and 2023, without necessarily following a chronological order. As the organizer writes: "The twists and turns are part of the process, and last a lifetime, except for those who attain enlightenment. This is also the path of the artist, sometimes he reaches high levels of manifestation in his work and sometimes experiences the fall back to the earth, to the mundane, giving sequence, the next day, to labor, to the process of continuous transformation of matter through practice.".
