Summary:
Clinical research in medicine can take many forms. Although randomized controlled trials remain the gold standard, well-designed and conducted observational studies, such as retrospective cohort studies, can provide good quality, clinically relevant data and can often be less time-consuming to set up and run than a randomized controlled trial. This case study provides an insight into conducting a retrospective cohort study in a university hospital--some potential pitfalls which may be encountered and a brief overview of the data analysis involved.
