- Summary:
- Surveys are common tools used to identify, describe, and quantify trends among populations. Despite there being thousands of validated surveys spanning nearly every subject, it may be necessary to create a unique set of questions for a specific study or research aim. Certain areas of medicine such as patient expression of religion/spirituality (R/S), patient expression of illness, and illness burden can be difficult to quantify given their philosophical nature. Due to this, it is more difficult to design a well-crafted survey, especially given the lack of validated instruments. This paucity in survey instruments is further amplified in the field of medical education, as little is known about medical student experiences with patient expression of illness. In this case report, the efforts of creating, delivering, and analyzing a survey regarding the R/S educational intervention, and student experiences with patient expressions of R/S are described.
