Summary:
Research with vulnerable hard-to-reach populations can be logistically challenging and costly to conduct with traditional methodologies such as survey sampling. However, without such studies health inequalities impacting on such groups will continue to persist, particularly in the absence of evidence to document disparities. It is therefore imperative that novel methodologies to understand the health outcomes in such groups are considered. In this research case study, using the example of a large mixed methods study (E-CHASM: Ethnicity and Cardiovascular HeAlth inequalities in Severe Mental illness), the use of large-scale electronic health records to understand physical health inequalities in people with severe mental illnesses, with a particular focus on ethnic minority groups, is described. In particular, the process of using electronic health records with their attendant advantages, limitations, and important caveats and considerations for other researchers considering these approaches are highlighted.
