Summary:
This case study highlights the challenges and essential considerations when undertaking epidemiological field research in cross-cultural contexts affected by political conflict. The case study describes the importance of adequate planning, culturally adapting and validating data collection instruments, the added value of including qualitative components in the study design, and benefits associated with involving key decision makers in the formulation of recommendations based on research findings. Cross-sectional household surveys can be an important source of baseline data, are relatively simple, and require fewer resources than other analytical study designs. They can also provide unique opportunities for strengthening partnerships with stakeholders and building the research capacity of new graduates.
