Summary:
Research on the prevalence and impact of sexually transmitted infections, as well as many other infections and diseases, are rarely conducted among indigenous peoples around the globe. Because of negative past experiences with researchers, academics, and government officials, many indigenous people mistrust those entities. To learn more about the impact of infectious and non-infectious diseases among indigenous peoples, research must be conducted in a respectful, legal, and ethical way, and in partnership with indigenous authorities and community stakeholders. This study describes the implementation of a mixed methods study of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon.
