Summary:
Clinical audit is a commonly used process within health disciplines and offers the opportunity for clinicians to engage meaningfully with research and to contribute to the development of solutions to workplace problems. The challenge lies in recognizing that this needs to be carried out in a rigorous manner, that it is in fact research and not just a routine measurement of everyday practice. This study highlights the significance of recognizing and responding to a workplace situation, in this case endemic violence and aggression in an emergency department, and the importance of being able to validate staff perceptions. The importance of selecting an appropriate research method and of engaging staff in a busy environment is highlighted, as well as the need to continue with a reflexive and responsive approach.
