- Summary:
- This case about Balgownie Oil Tool Company (BOTC) provides a way to investigate the opportunities and challenges for manufacturing organisations operating in today's highly competitive international business-to-business oil and gas manufacturing environment. BOTC's main product is the ‘centraliser' which cases drill pipes, along with a range of associated equipment to safely house drill pipes and equipment flowing to the seabed in pursuit of fossil fuel extraction. Governments from around the world agree that more needs to be achieved to protect the planet from fossil fuel reliance and the resultant pollution. Accordingly, new products need to be offered to the market whilst being cognizant of the benefits obtained from cost-sharing via joint ventures and appointing overseas agents and distributors in an age where the pressure is on the industry to provide sources of renewable energy. BOTC, whilst continuing to serve the mature oil and gas industry, must be strategically active in providing new products to serve the renewables sector. Robert Stewart, the managing director, is looking to find ways to innovate and respond to the existential threats posed to the extractive energy industry in which the company is currently positioned, but first he must consider the plans of Lewis Richard at BOTC's annual conference. The CEO wants to use lower cost products, but Robert is concerned about this because he wants the company to continue to be recognised as a leader in manufacturing safe, high-quality products as the energy market shifts toward renewables.
