- Summary:
- Global academic interest on diverse stories and realities of the LGBT has been gradually progressing through the years. Upon navigating intersectionalities within these sexual minorities, however, a significant gap in non-Western, specifically, local Philippine, literature suggests that the plight of the older members of the LGBT remains hidden and unheard. This called forth a qualitative study on lived and told stories of coming out and aging among older gay men and lesbians in the western region of the Philippines. Framed in a narrative inquiry approach, face-to-face in-depth interviews as research strategy was most suited in capturing how the participants construct and reconstruct, make sense of, and put value in their stories. Five gay men and five lesbians aged 50 years and older were interviewed in the study. Utilizing in-depth interviews allowed for extensive and rich accounts obtained from the older cohort of sexual minorities. This research method case focused on how in-depth interview, as a strategic tool, works in congruence with the goals of a narrative frame of study. This case discusses primary challenges that come in contextualizing age, sexuality, and culture in crafting the interview questions, recruitment of participants, the actual conduct of interview, and how these challenges were addressed and reflected on. Interviewer competencies and protocols are also explained in this case, given the unique sociocultural context of the study. The use of in-depth interview as a method was urged by the need to highlight narratives of older gay men and lesbians as a considerably invisible sector of the Philippines.
