- "על פי התפישה המקובלת, המטרה הסופית של הציונות כתנועה לאומית פוליטית הייתה הקמתה של מדינת לאום. בספרו החדש על תולדות הדמיון המדיני הציוני מראשית רעיון הציונות המודרנית ועד להקמתה של מדינת ישראל, דימיטרי שומסקי קורא תיגר על תפיסה דטרמיניסטית באמצעות עיון בכתבים לא מוכרים מאת אבות הציונות ובבחינה מחדש של המקורות הידועים, שפורשו באורח מגמתי וא-היסטורי בספרות הקלאסית על הציונות. המחבר מגלה שמנהיגי הציונות שיוו לנגד עיניהם את מימוש ההגדרה העצמית היהודית בארץ ישראל דווקא במסגרת רב-לאומית. תחילה הם דמיינו מחוז אוטונומי באימפריה הרב-לאומית העות'מאנית, ולאחר מכן - בתקופת המנדט הבריטי - דמוקרטיה רב-לאומית. הספר מראה שהמודלים של מדינה יהודית, שאותם ביססו ופיתחו האבות המייסדים של מדינת ישראל, כללו בתוכם הכרה בקיום לאומי קולקטיבי של ערביי ארץ ישראל. דפוסים מדיניים כאלה לא היו נחלתן של דמויות שוליות בקרב הציונות (כגון אנשי 'ברית שלום'), אלא אדרבה, הוצגו על ידי הציונים המרכזיים ביותר: יהודה לייב פינסקר, בנימין זאב הרצל, אחד העם, זאב ז'בוטינסקי ודוד בן-גוריון. הספר מתמקד בחמש הדמויות הללו ומציג אותן ואת השקפותיהן באופן חדשני, שנודעת לו השפעה על השיח הישראלי העכשווי"--Back cover.
