- Summary:
- The case analyzes the success factors of a mobile-only airfare prediction app introduced in early 2015 by a travel startup, Hopper Inc. Hopper leveraged big data and predictive analytics to inform its app users of probable airfares for as much as 12 months from the date of app use. The app predicts the optimal time to book a ticket to maximize savings. As Hopper expanded, it partnered with several airline companies worldwide. Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, Hopper also expanded its services to other areas such as hotel booking, which helped app users make decisions on their vacation destinations. Nevertheless, by 2018 competitors such as Expedia also began using predictive analytics for a range of their services. The case encourages students to understand the power of big data and how a firm such as Hopper can compete and expand by leveraging big data.
