Summary:
Worship organizations are the largest category of organization in the world, and they use faith-based or sect-specific theological methods of decision-making that can offer insight into the dynamics of organization change. One example of a theological method of decision-making is the Euclidian-based "Wesleyan Quadrilateral" found in the United Methodist Church. At the Parkerstown United Methodist Church, three progressive leaders helped form a Reconciling Group in response to continued bans on same-sex marriage and the ordination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQQ) pastors. One has drafted a welcoming statement—a tool used for organization change and marketing—but the other two have issues with the draft welcoming statement. While the three progressive leaders each seek organization change, they have different views of change based on their own application of the "Wesleyan Quadrilateral." A process of developing a welcoming statement becomes fraught with issues of power and organizational identity. At least two of the three progressive leaders find the intrusion of external culture and secular politics has created a mess.
