This case provides a typical example of a large multinational corporation grappling with quality issues in a new industry and finding how blind implementation of company policies can snowball into a very large socio-environmental issue. Simple solutions are often overlooked in favor of complex ones. This case amply illustrates how simple measures to ensure quality at the source can eliminate major issues and help the company in overall business improvement.The case is about the mushroom production unit of a large multinational corporation that had set up a plant at a hill station in southern India. The location was selected because of the climatic conditions. One of the inputs for mushroom cultivation was chicken manure, which was available from the poultry farms near the mushroom plant. However, the quality of the manure was not consistent as it was not properly stored at the poultry farms. Poor quality manure when rejected at the plant led to serious environmental issues and the local population became unhappy about the plant. How quality control at the source could present a solution for major problems is highlighted in the case. It also led to a closer cooperation (a kind of proctored outsourcing) with the local population, which allowed the plant to produce a large variety of products. Students will consider the dilemmas faced by the plant manager on how to contain the environmental issues at the mushroom plant and resident dissatisfaction while maintaining quality of the inputs required for production.
