Summary:
To improve the disability statistics in a development program, a research team applied action research with mixed methods. The methods included a review of related statistics and documents, key informant interviews, participant observation, and active dialogue. As a member of the research team, I was in charge of survey analysis to develop the system of producing disability statistics. Moreover, I actively engaged with local stakeholders such as government officials and disabled persons to revise the survey methods on disability statistics. During my engagement with these stakeholders, I found that the existing disability statistics were based on differing models of disability and survey methods, revealing the dynamics among national and international stakeholders. In particular, I faced some challenges when discussing with them complex issues for planning and conducting the research. Therefore, in this case examining the challenges in action research on pluralistic disability statistics from the perspective of an international researcher, I emphasize the importance of using mixed methods with collaborative actions.
