Summary:

This case study provides an overview of our experience conducting a mixed methods study with affected family members (caregivers) of adult family members with substance use problems. The broad aim of our study was to examine affected family members' experience in supporting their relative. To address this aim, we used an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, incorporating an online survey followed by qualitative telephone interviews. In this case study, we examine the benefits of using online surveys, main challenges in conducting telephone interviews with sensitive topics, and issues associated with participant recruitment.
