- Summary:
- Our case study describes a secondary analysis of existing data from a larger program of research that includes a data set of 35 semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with parents of children living with complex chronic conditions. For this particular study, we analyzed parents' responses to the interview question: What advice would you have for other parents of children living with complex chronic conditions? Through our thematic analysis, we found that advice-giving messages became important conversations occurring within informal support networks, served as additional resources to parents, and complimented the more formal care provided to parents by their child's physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals. In particular, advice-giving messages achieved the goal of passing along direction, sharing one's experiences, and highlighting best practices learned. In this case study, we discuss the key steps to conducting a secondary analysis of existing data, which includes a discussion of finding relevant scholarly research on your particular health topic, writing qualitative research questions, and other important considerations when collecting and analyzing qualitative interview data. Finally, we proffer practical lessons learned from our experiences with interviewing this population and partnering with formal health care programs to advance formative translational research.
