- Summary:
- This case study will outline the development of a health services conceptual model, using organizational ethnography with a focused design as a framework for mixed methods inquiry and mixed methods data integration as a vehicle for model development. Here we describe the five phases of an exploratory study conducted at a nonprofit urban adult day program for community-dwelling older adults, most of whom were admitted for dementia diagnoses. A mixed methods design was used to integrate qualitative and quantitative data from stakeholder interviews, individual and group observation, and organizational artifacts. Key challenges with using these methods included the limited period of immersion at the research site, participant enrollment hurdles to obtaining consent and assent, and data conversion from paper to electronic form. Study findings, comprised of stakeholder engagement, financial and psychological costs, and quality of life outcomes, were synthesized to develop a conceptual model for person-engaged dementia care.
