Summary:
Provider networks serve as crucial intermediaries between consumers and access to medical care, yet current approaches to analyzing them hold only limited value for consumers. We set out to make the assessment of provider networks more consumer-centric by incorporating travel distance and provider quality into the analysis. We also sought to find an innovative way to overcome the inaccuracies of provider directories. The peer review process significantly altered the trajectory of the project, for example, by eliminating the quality focus of the study. However, we were able to overcome resource constraints and achieve two major goals of the project. Although the substantive content of the paper changed in response to the peer-reviewers, the methodological innovations were preserved and elevated.
