Summary:
Cortisol is a stress hormone used to objectively measure physiological and psychological stress, and can be collected noninvasively via saliva. This project reviews the methods used for saliva collection to monitor cortisol during a season, and reviews the biological and participant factors that should be considered during future athletic research in the field. Eighteen National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I female soccer athletes (20.2 ± 1.1 years) participated in this study. Salivary samples were collected between 07:00 and 21:00 hr at baseline, from which graphs were created to represent the circadian rhythm of cortisol per participant. Salivary samples to measure concentration and flow rate were collected using salivettes by participants before and after five competitive matches. Baseline saliva collection was successful, and graphs of cortisol concentration over a 24-hr period were created for all of the participants. Athletic training staff supported sample collection during all matches, and their positive influence on salivette return rate and usability of the saliva for cortisol analysis was evident. A decrease in returned salivettes was exhibited as the season progressed, potentially due to a decrease in relatedness and competency imparted on the participants by the researchers. The reduced number of baseline collections yielded a complete return of salivettes and enough data to generate usable graphs of cortisol concentration. Packets improved the collection of all time points for individual participants at each match. The athletic training staff was invaluable in this type of athletic research. Developing the researcher-participant relationship with student-athletes should be a primary goal.
