Summary:

The research investigation described in this case study served as a follow-up to my doctoral thesis, which entailed semi-structured interviews (among other methodologies) with weight loss surgery (also known as bariatric surgery) patients. The results indicated that some patients face barriers in obtaining postoperative care and support services from their home bariatric clinics. Interested to learn more about this phenomenon, I conducted a thematic analysis of 217 posts and comments on two top patient-led weight loss surgery websites using a "hybrid approach" of inductive and deductive coding. Although the data were in the public domain and the institutional review board at my university considers research investigations utilizing publicly available online data to be "exempt" from review, I nevertheless had to carefully weigh the posters' and commenters' right to privacy against the social benefit of the research and my right to conduct it. Upon consulting guidelines from the Association of Internet Researchers, I decided that the best course of action in my case was to obscure the names of the websites and the posters and commenters in the final publication that resulted from this project.
