Summary:
In this case study, I describe the research design and implementation process of my qualitative content analysis of transcripts of congressional hearings on torture. I begin by providing the project overview and context, highlighting how both my biography and developments in U.S. politics inspired the project. I then describe my initial research proposal for this study, explaining how literature on torture guided my research decisions, why I took an inductive approach to the analysis, and how I selected data. Finally, I recount how I implemented the research, highlighting challenges that I encountered while doing so. My hope is that novice and intermediate researchers considering qualitative content analysis will find that this case helps them make sound decisions about research design and implementation.
