Summary:
During 2011-2012, I collected data, via semi-structured interviews, for my PhD project about the racialization of names. I sought to understand whether, how, and in what contexts names are understood in racialized ways. I therefore interviewed those who had experienced bearing one surname that was stereotypically considered "White British" and another surname that was typically understood to be ethnically/racially different from it. During this process, I learned some valuable lessons about how to design an exploratory piece of qualitative research, access a hidden population sample, use a snowball sample, manage the disclosure of personal information to participants to build rapport, deal with "difficult" participants who express controversial views during interviews, be reflexive throughout the research process, and select meaningful pseudonym names, which preserve participants anonymity.
