Summary:
In my research, I have regularly dealt with time-consuming data management issues before I started with my analysis. These data issues are very common for macro data in the social sciences, where different data sources have to be gathered, harmonized, and combined. Here, I present some of the challenges in the context of a replication I conducted for a prominent study on voting result differences between national and "second-order" European Parliament elections. First, I discuss the research design of such a macro-quantitative study and the value of replication studies in more detail. Second, I present typical data management issues preceding the actual analysis. Finally, I discuss polynomial terms in ordinary least squares (OLS)-models which are often used in second-order election studies. Replications are an excellent starting point for independent research. They allow you to assess the merits and robustness of existing work and regularly lead to new research questions. My discussion provides a broad perspective on the benefits of replicating studies and the required steps by presenting an example for elections to the European Parliament.
