- Summary:
- Author Laura Malosetti Costa deals with the portrait as a support for affective memory and the idealization or caricatured deformation of certain public figures over time, in its double dimension of art and document. His analysis is focused on the most enduring portraits of some heroic figures of Latin American independence. Critically examines the almost total absence of portraits of Juana Azurduy and the problematic fixation of its image; the inadequacy of the portraits of Belgrano al estereotipo masculino del guerrero revolucionario; la imagen blandaʺ del traicionado Miranda, and the construction of the topic of the modern hero in Simón Bolívar and Artigas. In addition, at the crossroads between photography and painting, he analyzes the portraits of San Martín, Javiera Carrera, Esteban Echeverría and Lucio V. Mansilla, and observes that many times truth or strict similarity does not prevail, but adequacy to the ideas that are sustained by each heroic figure. Finally, it investigates the capacity of some portraits to affectively sustain imaginary communities both of devotion and hatred, in two paradigmatic cases of the 20th century.: Ernesto Cheʺ Guevara and Eva Perón. Retratos Públicos (Public Portraits) is, in the words of the author, "the analysis of those portraits of Latin American heroes and heroes that have impacted many generations, trying to understand how they were installed in the collective imagination, how they were conceived and received, what is in them powerful and persistent to make them triumph over other images of the same historical character".
