Summary:

The #MeToo debate could have raged back in antiquity - take the story of Apollo and Daphne, for instance. Apollo harasses the nymph so much that Daphne prefers to die than be dishonoured by him. Handel began setting this opera-like cantata to music when he was still in Italy. It was premiered in London in the presence of Queen Anne, who was so delighted she expressed the wish to see Handel more often in her retinue. We are delighted that the superb soprano Anna Prohaska will once again featuring in the "retinue" of the Handel Festival. She has been a leading international singer for many years, yet has remained natural and true to life - excellent prerequisites for a cogent interpretation oft he nymph Daphne. With Fulvio Bettini and the ensemble Il Suonar Parlante under the baton of Vittorio Ghielmi, the requisite dramatic foundations and the equally necessary italianitá will be provided.
