- Imprint date conjectured from references to the author's first book (The Claremont tales, 1852) having been "published by Gall & Inglis thirty-four years ago" and the author having spent "the last eleven years .. labouring in India" (beginning in 1875) on page [2] of publisher's advertisements.

- Schimmel Collection copy has affixed to front pastedown prize bookplate of Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Bristol, for distinction in English signed by headmaster Robert Jackson (ca. 1848-1917) and board of governors chairman Herbert Thomas (1819-1903) with the year (1887) completed in manuscript and the form ("Middle 4th"), prize ("4th") and name of the recipient ("E.V. Foss", i.e. Edwin Vincent Foss, 1872-1935) supplied in manuscript.
