- Summary:
- The American Stage to 1819 is the most comprehensive collection of the theater-related works printed in America up to 1819. Importantly, it includes both American and foreign authors, providing scholars with not only the works created by Americans but also the foreign works that Americans read—and were influenced by—during this era. It contains more than 2,000 works from all genres—from historical plays to amateur productions, melodramas, pantomimes, comedies, farces, satires, musicals, and operas. It contains hundreds of plays—many authored by women—as well as playbills, theatrical histories, and works of literary criticism. It also contains all published works—including letters, speeches, and official proclamations--about the world of the American stage to 1819, including its moral, political, and religious aspects. The works in this database cover many topical categories such as comedy and drama, notable dramatists, works of Shakespeare, musical works, and others.
