Summary:
Order and balance, learned in her training as an architect and urban planner, articulate the backbone of Ana Mena's(Toluca, Edo. de México, 1964) pictorial composition. A shrewd observer of the detail that generates the whole, the artist subjects her painting to the rigorous discipline of repetition in search of expressions that go beyond the gaze. From a bird's eye view, his urban maps seem to evoke the invisible cities of Italo Calvino, creating patterns of urban skins as living attributes of city animality, from the texture of amate paper - a vegetal support that refers to a millenary Mexicanness - and extracting shapes that denote his fascination with the animal kingdom: bison, monarch butterflies and jaguars come to life against the counterpoint of two fleshless human skulls in a delayed kissʺ as a metaphor for the extinction of species. Ana Mena is, without a doubt, one of the representative women of Mexican plastic arts.
