- Summary:
- Early American music manuscript tune book including military marches from the American Revolution and dance music (cotillions, quadrilles and contra dances) popular from the late 18th century. The first twelve pieces--the non-dance works--are scored for two melody lines for unspecified instruments and a bass line, the bass presumably to be realized by keyboard or basso continuo. All twelve appear in Samuel Holyoke's publication, The instrumental assistant, vol.1 (Exeter, New Hampshire : H. Ranlet, [1800]) in arrangements identical to those in this tune book. Some of the marches appear in earlier 18th century publications. For example, Love's march, Prince Eugene's march and Count Brown's march appear in the 1765 publication, A collection of airs and marches for two violins or German flutes, some of which have basses (London : R. Bremner). The dances in the manuscript are the unaccompanied melodies typical of tune books. The ruled pages in the second half of the volume are blank except for three staves of musical notation in pencil on the final page.
