Un oiseau des arbres de Vie consists entirely of Messiaen's transcription of a New Zealand bird, the Tui, ornithological designation Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae, a relatively large member of the honeyeater family. Appropriately for Messiaen, the Tui was known as the Parson bird by early European settlers on account of the white tuft on its throat resembling a clerical dog-collar." -- Preface, page vi.
