Summary:
A report on the American government's efforts to control the Zika virus, a virus that can be transmitted through mosquitoes, blood and sex. It can result in babies born with catastrophic brain damage called microcephaly, or other developmental problems. The Zika virus continues to infect people in Puerto Rico, and also in every state but Alaska. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) plans to test the vaccine they created on thousands of volunteers living in Zika-infected areas. If it protects people in these areas, it could be ready for distribution by early 2018. Includes interviews with: Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); Dr. Alberto De La Vega, obstetrician/gynecologist in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Also includes comments by: Rocio Hernandez, who was pregnant with Zika virus; and Catherine Paquette, who volunteered to receive first Zika vaccine.
