Summary:
In this work we present the the data and interpretations of the carved lithic artifacts from the research carried out on San Lorenzo Island by the San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán Archaeological Project, led by Dr. Ann Cyphers. This archaeological material was collected during 11 field seasons and comes from 76 excavation sites in the island. This study would not have been possible without the large and exhaustive set of artifacts recovered in domestic, productive, and civic-ceremonial areas at various sites on the island. It is a testament to the value and benefit they derive from long-term interdisciplinary research, done with a rigorous and comprehensive field methodology along with a careful recovery of archaeological remains. The production of obsidian knives was one of the first specialized trades in Mesoamerica and the Malpica workshop is one of the oldest examples of how that craft was organized; The work was domestic and was a supplementary subsistence activity.
