- Summary:
- The International Union of Physics and Applied Physics (IUPAP) International Conference on Women in Physics, first held in 2002, convened for the seventh time under exceptional circumstances. Initially slated to be hosted in Melbourne, Australia, in 2020, it was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then held virtually in 2021. The virtual format permitted more country teams to participate: ICWIP7 had the highest overall attendance to date, the most fully representative set of countries since the first ICWIP in 2002, and the highest fraction (20%) of attendees from countries with a low human development index. Plenary talks and panel discussions covered a global survey of physicists, new digital opportunities for collaboration among high- and low-GDP countries, the role of men as allies, intersectionality, and the functions of IUPAP and its Working Group for Women in Physics (WG5). Workshops covered data professionalism, intersectionality, entrepreneurship, physics education, and the efforts of women physicists in developing countries. Plenaries, panels, and workshops were presented through the Whova platform. Four poster sessions (hosting a total of 90 posters) and various social events were adapted to the online format using the Gather platform. The posters included country reports prepared by the Country Teams of WG5; reports and research on diversity, equity, and inclusion; and original physics research. Forty-four of the country reports are included in the proceedings. Recommendations to IUPAP to support inclusiveness were generated in the workshops.
