Notes:
With his short and deep stories, Cem Güventürk presents a unique combination of text and graphics, illustration and caricature, the everyday and the one that requires deep contemplation. The artist's harsh determinations and his writing and drawing style, which do not compete with each other in the way of showing the insoluble human conditions, form the basis of his approach, which has already become his signature. Güventürk's is a style that does not exclude tragedy or ridiculousness, can be both figurative and contain high-grade abstractions. The album, which was previously published in Turkish as Öyküler in 2020, takes its place in the Flaneur Books catalog with its English translation. Stories also gives the reader the opportunity to rediscover Güventürk's art in English, which has become the global common language, with the universality of the stories that transcends the locality in which they are produced, and the artist's ability to weave the themes that the illustrator deals with. All of the short stories in the album almost synchronized with the practice of keeping a diary, a poetic flow, the necessity of a philosophical analysis with the invitation to produce a critical thought, the dynamics of renunciation and acceptance at the same time, revealing their unique shock effects. The artist works on countless images and situations in a line that extends from masks, personal spaces, narrow and wide spaces, minimal use of language to narrators who love to speak sensibly. Perhaps the secret of Güventürk's success should be sought here: In this graphic language, which can remain open-heartedly personal and embrace the anonymity of a collective inner voice.
