- Summary:
- "The term blackwork is probably best known from embroidery, where patterns in black thread on a white ground formed a popular variation to colored patterns from the fifteenth century onward (64.101.1236). However, when used in relation to prints-which were, more often than not, already black and white to begin with-the term refers to a special engraving technique that was adopted from the goldsmith trade."
