Schrijver discusses the situation of the Hebrew manuscript after the invention of the printing press, covering such topics as cultural and historical context and the relationship between text and image. He begins with a more general history of the Hebrew manuscript, discusses the first of the Hebrew printed books, and also covers various Hebrew titles from the 16th through 18th centuries
