- Summary:
- "Uses the mortuary record to shed light on different ancient Macedonian social groups. Building on the largest sample of Macedonian burials from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period synthesized to date, this work provides new insight into the society that gave birth to Philip II and Alexander the Great. An intersectional focus on gender, age and status reveals the lives of Macedonians only rarely discussed, from non-elite men to women and children. Quantitative analysis and case studies add complexity and nuance to our understanding of a society sometimes reduced to mighty warriors and fierce royal women, as the book introduces children who were seen as disposible or cherished depending on their family pedigree, women who drew both on their fertility and on male-associated objects for power, and men who were neither as militant nor as Homeric as traditionally depicted. The book also explores change over time, and addresses the promise and challenges of applying intersectionality to archaeological contexts. Readers have access to a database with over a thousand grave, available for anyone wishing to conduct their own analyses or research based on it."-- Back cover.
